Prior to meeting the educational requirements an individual should identify goals for a career in the health industry. Without a dedication to public health, the service provided may not support the needs of the community. There is the “ethical” and “responsible” codes that needs to be considered, as we owe it to our clients to offer them optimal care and resources for their continued health (Sharma & Romas, 2012). These codes are what allow the fields of health education to offer merit and trust to those that receive services. Trust in the services offered is imperative, as this will encourage the participants to continue with the strategies that are implemented. In order to begin the process of obtaining a CHES designation, you must first obtain a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree in Health Education and an official transcript showing a major in health education or an official transcript showing 25 semester hours or 37 quarter hours of course work (with a grade of “c” or better) in seven areas of Responsible and Competency for Health Educators (Exam Eligibility, nd). The varying levels of education from bachelors to doctoral degrees mandate the level you are allowed to practice your designation. This requirement allows the proposed candidate to exhibit satisfactory knowledge when constructing programs, services, and assessments of needed services (Sharma & Romas, 2012). Upon completion you are then eligible to take the certification exam thus earning the title of Certified Health Education Specialist.
