How To Be Seen As Social Deviant

“I have to do something.” Those words will forever be in my head. Those were the last words my friend, Jesse, said to me. Previously that day, Jesse, his girlfriend named Destiny, and myself were all hanging out. We had been told that there was a fight planned for that evening at midnight. The people involved were Jesse’s cousin and Roy. I knew Roy because he was my next door neighbor. We had been friends for years. This fight had gotten started over Twitter and Roy had made some threats. Jesse wanted to go to the fight to make sure his cousin didn’t get too hurt. Fights were really common in my town and the police never really did anything to stop them. Once Jesse, Destiny, and I all got to the school grounds where the fight was going to happen, …show more content…
According to the encyclopedia (Tittle 2002), there is the statistical approach which observes how people in a group actually behave. If the larger of the population does one thing, then not doing it is seen as deviant. Another way to see if the act is deemed deviant is the absolutist approach. Someone like a social scientist decides what is considered good and just, and then figures out the types of deviations from those acts through criteria. A lot of people don’t like this approach because they think that someone can’t decide for a whole community what is good for them, but some believe that through logic and research, someone can decide what acts are good for society. The third way to see if an act is socially deviant is through the legalistic approach. This is, as a I mentioned earlier, is how the law prohibits as act, or a failure to perform a certain act. Most societies go by this approach since it is deemed safe and there are professionals to help protect people from those deviant acts. Murder is a serious deviant act and is taken very seriously by all societies because of the severity of it. It is a brutal act that has to be one of the top deviant acts against …show more content…
In the US, the sentence can be anywhere from just a few years to the death penalty, which is very rare. In other countries, and even some of our state here in the US, the death penalty is used a lot more. This has to do with how that society in general defines social deviance and what acts qualify for it. Some countries allow the beating of spouses, while here in the US, it is illegal. Every society has their own ideas about what is deviant and the severity of that act. All deviant acts have consequences whether they are good or bad. A socially deviant act is something that goes against norms, which could really be a lot of things. It could go from something like piercings all the way to murder. Murder is one of the worst deviant acts a person can commit because it takes someone’s life and has horrible effects of those who knew the victim. This socially deviant act is frowned upon and will never be an acceptable thing as long as the law and government works and upholds the

In Chapter 8 of the textbook, Sociology A Down-To-Earth Approach, the question “What is Deviance?” is asked. In my opinion, the answer would be the gang followed in this documentary video. Their name, MS-13, in Salvadorian Spanish, stands for Mara, meaning “group” or “clique” and Salvatrucha is commonly known to mean “street smart”. (Wikimedia Foundation) The majority of the acts that the MS-13 gang commits are deviant, because of the reaction to those acts.…

Elements of deviant and abnormal behavior associated with white-collar crime Deviant behavior is defined as any human activity that violates social norms. Social norms are the basic framework that help to keep our society organized and functioning. People that don’t or can’t abide by those norms are present in every aspect of humanity. Normally people will identify these outsiders and keep their distance. Mostly these individuals end up on the fringes of our civilized world, though there are certainly exceptions to this rule.…

For example death penalties occur only in a few countries such as Indonesia, china and Iraq. Death sentences are more often given to those who have committed heinous crimes such as serial killings. Whereas for the death penalty in medieval times a person would have committed adultery or treason (Addison, P, 2012 –Crime and Punishment). This is much more severe than modern day punishments as adultery today doesn’t lead to any punishments. Crime and punishment today varies depending on a person’s culture, social class or gender.…

Breaking a social norm might seem easy, yet when it’s time to actually break it it’s nerve wracking. On a Wednesday afternoon around 1:30, Jerry and I lunched at Chili’s located in Miami Gardens. Approximately, there were about 12-15 observers not including the waiters. Because the bar area was the most crowded area in the restaurant, I decided to lunch there. Majority of the population were African-American male and female, yet there were a couple of white observers.…

“It is the deviants among us who hold society together”. This paradox is the topic of our current paper. The crux of this paradox lies in our reactions to deviant behavior; though by and large we no longer strive for total mechanical solidarity, or social cohesion based on sameness (Conley, 2013 pg. 191), in more interpersonal settings we often adhere to, depending on the setting, looser or stricter rules of social conduct where transgressions on those rules result in a negative reaction designed to ensure that we all conform to the prescribed rules of the situation; as a result, we reinforce those same norms and define what is socially acceptable for ourselves. For instance, if one engages, informally, in somewhat deviant behavior which…

According to the sociologist Dalton C. Conley, a culture is composed of values, norms, and practices that are shared among the members of that society (Conley 78). With the concepts of culture, members and groups can define themselves, conform to shared beliefs and practices, and be functional members of society. Cultural norms are defined as the unspoken rules that dictate what are acceptable behaviors in order to establish a social foundation. Therefore, anyone that violates these unspoken rules is considered as a social deviant. Although informal deviance is not punishable by laws because they are minor violations, they still elicit…

Deviance is recognized as a violation against the cultural or social norms in society. This statement of Becker argues that an act only becomes deviant; depending on how bad the act is and how society reacts towards that act. Becker argues that crime and deviance depends on the society’s reaction against the act. Based on Hilary Allen’s examination of criminal statistics in 1987, the statistics showed a leniency towards female offenders.…

In more simplistic terms it can be depicted as one’s ability to connect his or her own particular problems and relate them back to a more social level that others may have in common. The sociological imagination is a very interesting yet complex component in one’s life. It is a real eye opener. There are many aspects one’s sociological imagination can touch upon such as social class and inequality, gender, culture and socialization, deviance and criminality, etc.…
