There are technicians and mechanics. Their job descriptions are different depending on their education or experience. A beginner technician or mechanic may start of gaining skills while they do general housekeeping in the shop and get individualized hands on training from a skilled mechanic or technician. This would be titled an entry level employee. A technician will be responsible for keeping the vehicle in good repair, provide maintenance and diagnose the problems. They report their findings to the mechanic who will do the hands on work. Mechanics are considered the laborer who will do the “fixing” of the problem reported. A mechanic may also be the one to diagnose and repair with the proper education with some of the specialized equipment. Some special tools would include an oscilloscope, which is used to measure the voltage produced by electronic components, hydraulic lifts which raise trucks, buses, and heavy parts or equipment by using a lift or hoist, and lubricating machines. Some common tools would be a variety of different size bolts or screws used to repair parts, screwdrivers, battery chargers, wrenches, alignment equipment tools and gauges and many others.
