On July 17, 1812 the ship was near New York the Captain spotted many ships. The ships were unknown for a certain amount of time until the Captain decided that they were British. The Captain decided to flee away from the ships. But while he was fleeing the wind died out. So the Captain told the other crew members that they should start to make the ship lighter. People decided to dump off thousands of drinking water off the ship to make the ship lighter. Then the Captain ordered other small ships to go out and start to pull the ship. Even though they had lost the wind they were still ahead of the other British ships. When the ship was evading the British it was going at its fastest, 11 knots or thirteen MPH. Then the Captain told his crew members to get ready for a battle. The British did the same and they began to have a battle. The U.S.S. Constitution fought it out and won the battle. And the U.S.S. Constitution still has won many more
