Rainsford changed over the course of the story for several reasons. At the beginning of the story, Rainsford strongly expressed his opinion that an animal, specifically a jaguar, has no sense of fear of pain or death and that you are either a creature that hunts or one who is hunted and the ones who are hunted do not have fear. However when Rainsford himself, is being hunted by another human he realizes what fear an animal being hunted has and the danger the feel knowing any wrong move could get them killed.
