How Natural Gas Is Used To Create Energy

Improved Essays
Natural gas is used to create energy. Natural gas is a gas that occurs naturally underground. It is uses fossil fuels to make materials and chemicals. Geologist find and harvest the natural gas. Natural gas can be used for many things. It is beneficial in numerous ways. Although, there can also be downsides to using natural gas.
Natural gas is made by the burning of fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are natural fuels such as coal or gas. They are formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms. Millions of years ago the remains of plants and animals decayed and built up into thick layers, sometimes built with sand and silt. Over time these layers were buried under sand, silt and rock. Pressure and heat turned some of this material

Some of these rocks can be found on land while others are located on the ocean floor. If they find a promising area an exploratory well is drilled and tested. If the formation is proven to be economic for production wells are drilled down into the formation. Natural gas flows up through the wells to earth's surface. The natural gas withdrawn from a well is called wet natural gas.
There are multiple benefits of using natural gas for energy. Natural gas is a highly efficient form of energy. It has fewer impurities and is not chemically complex. Natural gas is used to make fertilizer for ethanol and can eliminate soot for cleaner diesel fuel. Its combustion generally results in less pollution. Electric utilities use natural gas to generate clean

Fossil fuels are natural fuels such as coal or gas. They are formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms. Natural gas moved in between the cracks and spaces of overlaying rocks and is tiny spores(spaces) of rocks when the fossil fuels decayed. Geologists locate the types of rocks that are likely to natural gas deposits. Some of these rocks can be found on land while others are located on the ocean floor. Once they find these rocks, production wells are drilled down into the formation. Natural gas flows up through the wells to earth's surface. Although there are many benefits of using natural gas as a form of energy, there are also some downsides. For one, natural gas is non-renewable. This means it cannot be recycled and used again. The world is running out of fossil fuels which is what's used to make natural gas. Natural gas can also cause fires and explosions. The United States typically accounts for 20 to 25 percent of total worldwide consumption of natural gas. 33% of the

Woodfibre LNG is planning to build a liquified natural gas (LNG) facility seven kilometres south-west of Squamish. The facility will be a link to the tankers that will bring the LNG to the rest of the world to meet rising energy demand. With the building of this facility there will be a new liquid natural gas pipeline from Greater Vancouver. LNG occurs when natural gas is cooled to -160C° and condensates from a gaseous state to a liquid state. Natural gas is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon consisting primarily of methane, but it also contains small amounts of ethane, propane, butane and pentanes which are useless to this specific industry.…

"1) identify a shale formation and drill a mile-deep well into the rock; 2) inject a mix of water, sand, and chemicals, known as fracking fluid, into the well at high pressure to break down the shale rock to release trapped natural gas (usually methane); and 3) relieve the pressure so the natural gas can be collected along with the waste water that must be treated or carefully disposed of. Although the fracking fluid is over 99 percent water and sand, the remaining one percent of organic and inorganic chemicals is critical to improve the fluid's viscosity, reduce friction against the well and rid it of clogging bacteria, and act as a solvent to dissolve rock and remove natural gas more efficiently process in…

The Marcellus Shale, the major natural gas contributor for America, is a middle Devonian-age black, low density, and organic rich shale in the Appalachian Basin. It covers much of Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York. Marcellus didn’t start gas production until 2005. By Oct 2015, the Marcellus Shale was producing natural gas around 16 trillion cubic feet per day, which is twice of the Eagle Ford Shale daily production level. However, its shale oil daily production was less than 100 thousand barrel per day.…

During drilling, the shale will splinter and allow gas to flow through the cracks allowing a larger extraction of methane gas. The gas then travels back through the pipe where it is captured and stored. Proponents of hydraulic fracking contend…

Should oil drilling be allowed off the coast of North Carolina? This question has sparked mass controversy not only in North Carolina but around the world. With population growth at an all-time high and demand for natural resources increasing rapidly, the race to energy security for our nation has escalated. In 2015, the Obama administration, declared the consideration of allowing offshore oil drilling off the coasts of Georgia, Virginia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. The U.S Department of the Interior drafted a 5-year plan making oil and gas leasing available on the southeast coast.…

The chemicals, sand, and water are then put down a horizontally drilled well at a high pressure. The pressure from this mixture is then forced down the well and causes the rock layer to crack. The natural gases are then released and flow up to the surface. The gases that are produced from shale, coal beds, and sands help produce oil and gas that are useful. Canada has been using hydraulic fracturing for years now.…

Hydraulic fracturing, also known simply as fracking, is a process used to extract natural gas and oil from beneath the earth’s surface. This process is accomplished by drilling a well and pumping pressurized water, proppants such as sand, and chemicals into that well; the result of this process is that fractures occur within the targeted layer of shale rock, which allow for extraction of the desired gas and oil (Hyder and Lerner 2250). As a cleaner burning fuel, natural gas continues to be an important prospect in the energy business. One estimate suggests that, “by 2035, shale gas may make up half of all natural gas produced in the United States” (2251). Hydraulic fracking, however, is not without its share of proponents and opponents.…

The price of natural gas has fallen from 12 million dollars per MMBtu to 4 million dollars between 2008 and 2015. This has allowed for a reduction in the cost of electricity and gasoline. This has been beneficial for both consumer and manufacturers of goods (text book). Relative to coal, fracking and natural gas usage is much cleaner.…

Fracking is the process in which sand, water, and chemicals are injected at high pressures to blast open rock and release the trapped natural gasses inside. As of late a new controversy has been born because of claims that fracking is a dangerous and unnecessary means of obtaining fossil fuel. However; abolishing fracking in our country is impractical because of the money it costs to import natural gases and the fact that natural gases are a key component in keeping the energy surging in our lives, home, and nation. The extraction of natural gases and resources has been a method that has evolved over the years; there are many different aspects to harnessing these resources including fracking.…

While winter approaches, arctic cold fronts bring a decrease in temperatures to the prairies and the demand for heat and energy increases. Western Canada derives much of its main source of heating fuel from natural gas. It also leads Canada in the production of natural gas through unconventional well production. Natural Gas or Methane (NH4) left in its organic state, and let migrate in the atmosphere as is the case in the Arctic with the thawing of the tundra, is 20 times more harmful as a greenhouse gas then Carbon Dioxide (CO2). When it is burned Methane is relatively cleaner and is less harmful to the environment in terms of greenhouse gas emissions than coal and other fossil fuels.…

I would just like to compare how natural gas can still win over renewable resources in one aspect. Let’s take a look at wind energy. As a renewable energy source, wind energy requires an immense amount of space to place the turbines.…

There is a clock running on how long we can make fossil fuels last, and that clock is ticking down every day every hour. We were made to evolve and learn, so let’s do so.
