Values are an important part of life. They shape the way a person acts in any given situation. Values influence human behavior. The influence that values have on behavior can be both positive and negative. Below are five important values that guide my critical thinking. Sometimes these values aid my critical thinking, but sometimes these values can be a hinderance to critical thinking. The five values that are most important that guide me in some compelling way are leadership, respect, help, patience, and forgiveness. These are all important values that have led me to a better life.

If I lead a group of people at work, I must think critically about how to explain my thinking. Leadership requires me to be a better communicator. Strong communication is one of my weaknesses so leadership also causes me to address this weakness head on. An effective leader must be an effective communicator.
Leadership also helps me because it requires me to grow and improve. I want to be the best leader I can be. To do that, I must be willing to address my weaknesses. Leadership helps me to think about my weaknesses and set goals to strengthen them. Leadership can also hinder my critical thinking. Leadership can cause stress. It is very stressful to feel responsible for others. Leaders are often judged on the actions of those that they are leading. This makes it easy for a leader to try to control others. However, I know I must remember that I cannot control the actions of others. I can make suggestions and set an example, but the only actions I can control are my own. Sometimes, I can confuse leadership and power. When I do this, my critical thinking is hindered.

It helps a person to forget the bad things someone else has done and forgive them. Think about those people as if they are mentally ill. Just forgive them. According to Rubin Khoddam (2014) “Forgiveness can mean you love from a distance. Forgiveness can mean you step into your present rather than anchoring in the past. Forgiveness is the cornerstone of any relationship, romantic or otherwise. We assume people see life the way we see life. However, there are as many perceptions as there are people in this world. Our lack of understanding of other people's perceptions can create gaps built on miscommunication, anger, animosity, and emotional disconnection.
