He struggled with feelings of inadequacy at the beginning of his career as a result of losing his first two major cases with both his clients being sentenced to death, and Atticus had to watch the executions. Although he is not a wealthy man, and the story is set during the great depression, he takes on the financial burden of paying for his brothers education. Atticus is very respectful to everybody in maycomb and their privacy; this is displayed when Lee wrote “Atticus never talked much about the Radleys: when Jem would question him Atticus’s only answer was for him to mind his own business and let the Radleys mind theirs, they have the right to”.
