Mr. Watters, who is a gentleman that works across from the Peebles’ home at the fairgrounds, has a crush on Edie and calls her beautiful after he caught her dressed up in Mrs. Peebles’ dress. She is dumfounded by such a compliment; and has no clue how to respond. As the story progresses, so does the relationship between Mr. Watters and Edie. Mrs. Peebles confronts Edie and asks her, “Where you intimate with him?” (Munro 62). To this question Edie responds that she was in fact “intimate” with him, however in her simple mind this means that they have kissed, not that they engaged in sexual intercourse. Moreover, Edie shows her simplicity by her fascination with the Peebles’ bathroom. She goes on to say, "I had a bath in there once a week. They wouldn't have minded if I took one oftener, but to me it seemed like asking too much, or maybe risking making it less wonderful" (Munro 48).
