Henry Ford was an American inventor who was born on July 30, 1830. Today, some people credit Ford with being one of America’s most important inventors of all time. Furthermore, he was able to acquire this title by inventing the Ford Model T automobile on October 1, 1908. It was this single creation that changed America forever. Henry Ford’s automobile changed travel in America forever. Before cars, people would mostly travel by use of carriage wagons, and bicycles. Eventually, people used trains to travel; however, there wasn’t an abundance of railroads for trains to be used everywhere. During this time in America, labor laws have not been created; accordingly, employers could pay their workers at any rate they felt. As a result, many families couldn’t get by with one income, so the mother of the family would have to go to work also. However, women were not respected in the working world; for this reason, they would get paid lower wages than men. Sadly, this meant that sometimes children would have to work too, for their parents couldn’t raise enough money for the family. Unlike companies that paid their workers unreasonable wages, Henry Ford paid all of his employers the same rate of five dollars a day. By doing this his workers didn’t have to make their children work just to afford the rent. Furthermore, Henry Ford wanted to mass produce his automobile; therefore, he made use of assembly lines. An assembly line is a rolling conveyer belt in which workers would stand at different points of the belt. Each set of workers has a specific part of the construction that they would focus on. This process of construction allowed for much work to be done in a swift manner. Since the assembly lines required plenty of workers, this created the job opening for many Americans; this especially helped out the immigrants and blacks who were sadly lacking in work due to their social status.
