Has the Rise of Technology Negatively Impacted Relationships?

As technology has became a pivotal part of society, it has changed the way that humankind interacts with one another. Technology allows people to communicate with others that could be thousands of miles away, or even across the world. This communication could be through ideas, opinions, and pictures that are shared in a way that was not possible in any other time period. Though technology has allowed people to do so many amazing things, it has also allowed for some not so great things to occur. Hackers have been able to get access to members of the general public's private information, and people are able to spread negative ideas and thoughts to others publicly. Technology has also

Thus, people have been able to talk with others more than they have ever been able to do before technology. However, due to the easy access of sharing things through this relatively new software, direct communication has decreased by a lot as people tend to send e-mails more than talking with the person face-to-face. This lack of direct communication has caused the growing phenomenon called "virtual distance" which is "a psychological and emotional sense of detachment that accumulates little by little" as people spend more time on their phone than talking with others (Lojeski, Westwell 2015). The resulting fact is that people then tend to "keep their ideas to themselves instead of sharing them with others in the workplace" as they do not feel very connected to the people they talk to (Lojeski, Westwell 2015). This sharing of ideas is "a critical exchange that's necessary for taking risks needed for innovation, collaboration and learning" and without it, society will suffer due to the lack of diversity in viewpoints and potentially life changing inventions (Lojeski, Westwell 2015) As previously mentioned, talking over text or the internet seems very impersonal and makes the conversation seem unimportant. Thus "communication becomes the transfer of impersonal information instead of the sharing of a passion"(Lojeski, Westwell 2015). People tend to not sha're important or personal things over a text, and they may never share them as direct communication rarely happens anymore due to people preferring the easiness of communicating through technology. Technology is ruining the ability to communicate with each other face to face. Without this ability, people are beginning to hide behind their social media platforms and this causes people to say things that are hurtful and damaging. The problem then is dangerous because we lose the chance to understand what is really happening and this causes us to do many things without the thought of consequences or repercussions. The society in Fahrenheit 451 is only focused on what effects them because of this they have centered their self around stuff to take their minds away from truly interacting with others. For example, the society in this book has parties just to sit around a television screen and watch the same thing together.…

I recognize the ease of demonizing technology. Technology has had the butt end of plenty of debates about all sorts of things. While I totally see where this article is coming from, I don't think it's telling the whole story. One thing that really bothered me reading this was that they measured phubbing. Their study left no room open for couples who may their phones a lot and are perfectly happy in their relationships.…

you if you need to work on a file that you have saved on its hard drive, cloud computing gives us the privilege to access our files anywhere and anytime, without a personal computer. Another technical application that is useful for communicating is Google Hangouts. Google Hangouts is much like Skype in that it utilizes video calling and video conferencing between two or more individuals or groups, however, Hangouts has certain features such as computer-to-phone calling and supports up to 10 people in one video chat for free – services that Skype charges in their Skype Premium plan. Ultimately, it would seem that Hangouts would be the cheapest and most versatile software to use, however, the variety of other communication software made available such as Skype gives us something that we did not have previously – choices. By having choices, we are free to choose whatever mode of communication works best for us or for an organization.…

Thanks to technology, we can instantly communicate across the world, but it doesn’t help us know what to say.” As advancements in technology increase, society becomes more concerned about its possible dangers. Wienclaw, PhD, talks about how unlike before technology, people do not even need to come together to work. If people are working on a project together, they do a conference call or facetime or skype and do their project. No need to meet somewhere to discuss the topic or set up a time when everyone can come together because everyone can “come together” in the comfort of their own homes over a computer or telephone. Wienclaw also talks about how technology affects relationships because before technology we valued seeing each other in person but now we do not value it as much because we have been texting or talking to that person on the phone since we last saw them so there is nothing to talk about or to catch up on anymore; we already know everything that has happened since we last saw them. I remember being younger and not being able to wait to see my friends because we did not have phones then so every moment we had together was just so amazing to us.…

According to the text, people now prefer mediated communication over face-to-face communication (Wagner 2015). It is unfortunate, but with social media now as a necessity, it is now the preferable way to communicate, which causes incompetent communication within a relationship trying to be formed. “Keller argues that social media can burden face-to-face relationships. Face-to-face relationships lose complexity if people choose social media instead of interacting with friends and family” (Wagner, 2015 p.116). Communication is crucial, and if mediated communication is preferred over in person conversations then the conversation will ultimately become almost awkward when having an actual conversation in real life.…
