The Moon’s differing phases have an enormous affect on the tide levels. Throughout the day, there is approximately 12 hours and 25 minutes between each high tide or low tide. The tides themselves are mainly caused by the moon and the sun is also a contributor to the tide levels. The Lunar phases: New Moon and Full Moon trigger Spring tides. Spring tides are when the the moon and sun are aligned and it creates increased amount of gravitational pull on the water creating higher tides. The opposite happens when the moon is at 1st quarter and 3rd quarter phases. These are called neap tides. Because the moon is not aligned with the sun, their gravitational force cancels out and result in weak tides.
