Division of labor permits people to specialize in one task, which in turn makes laborers/societies/organizations more efficient. Ultimately, being more efficient enables workers the time to improve their task so eventually organized communities of “specialists” come from division of labor. MS-13 was comprised of smaller groups of MS-13 gangs that operated independently from each other, but apparently this has changed over time. Law enforcement recently reported that gang members from across the US have joined forces, especially on the east coast. It was also reported that direction has come from El Salvador and California, so leaders are now no longer local to the gang. MS-13 recently became known in the east coast gang culture. Instead of operating independently from each other MS-13 is beginning to come together as they recognize power in numbers and organization of the gang. By doing this MS-13 has a much tighter organization, stronger structure, and instead of various groups being self supporting, there is one leader. The leader is in charge of member’s payment of the dues and they organize the criminal acts in which members engage. In the beginning, they emphasized friendship and partying and the gang protected one another from the other Hispanic gangs that bullied them. They originated as a turf-oriented street gang; however they have grown into a powerful, brutal, transnational, criminal organization. In its beginnings, like many other LA gangs, it began to give its members a way to negotiate economic hardships, social isolation, and victimization of other gangs. MS-13 emerged as a way for Salvadorian immigrants to ban together against the 18th street gang. They have evolved from a single turf gang into a well networked organization that interacts on the basis of social networks, influence, and opportunity. The “cliques” allot influence on the basis of respect reinforced by social ties and bonds ultimately enforced through violence. As the unintended consequence of the deportation of criminal aliens, they were deported after serving their sentences for violent crimes. They return to El Salvador and recreated the only lifestyle they knew, which is that of LA Gangs.
