Do you ever feel exited or anxious through a story? What you’re feeling is suspense. Edgar Allan Poe wrote the short story Tell- Tale Heart and the poem The Raven. Tell- Tale Heart is about this narrator that doesn’t think that he is mad or crazy but plans a murder because of an old man’s eye. The Raven is a poem by Poe that is about this man who is going through much sorrow from his lost love then being visited by a raven that only says nevermore. Suspense makes stories more interesting to read and makes you want to know what is going to happen next. Edgar Allan Poe uses characterization in both his short story Tell-Tale Heart and his poem The Raven. You can find more about the character or characters in a story through the things they say and do. This contributes to the suspense because you don’t know what is going to happen to the character or what it may do. Tell-Tale Heart has quite a bit of characterization. For instance, “Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees – very gradually – I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.” This shows that the narrator may be mad or crazy. This adds to the suspense because you don’t know how he is going to deal with his problems. The Raven gives suspense through characterization as well such as “ Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore, while I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping…” This creates tension because with the words dreary, weak, and weary you don’t know if his sad and sorrowful mood will change.
