It was called photo manipulation or now what we call photoshop. There were many different techniques to photoshopping a photo. Sometimes when taking photos outside with a scene, the photo may come out with a large exposure, which led to too much light in the photo. To solve this issue, two separate photos were taken to be conjoined into one which created the perfect exposure. "’Spirit’ Photography used multiple exposures to depict the medium or subject with ghostly presences in the same image” (Wild). Advertising and Business promoting utilized photoshop very well. For example, a company is advertising a new toy and to grab the attention of kids they photoshop the toy on top of mount everest. Businesses used it to beautify their products in order to pull in more customers who want to buy their product. Another large use of photo manipulation is politics and propaganda. Joseph Stalin was one of the most known of doing this. There is a picture of stalin and the chief of the soviet secret police walking alongside a river. During the great purge, which was from 1936-1938, the chief became a victim and so Stalin arrested the guy and killed him. In ealry China, their Society’s censorship was thought of as a keeping the people safe and making sure everyone can still stay up to date about current events.”The origin of the term censor can be traced to the office of censor established in Rome in 443 BC(Newth). Rome was devoted to making sure the people were civilized but informed about events that happened during that time, so censorship in Rome was a good thing. “In China, the first censorship law was introduced in 300 AD” (Newth). During the 1700s, the press was a huge crack down when it came to censorship in Europe.. In the 1800’s up came a media type called an independent press, which made censoring harder due to the new freedom of pres. Japan on the other hand had major censoring during this time. The Yokohama Mainichi, which came out in 1870. This was the first daily newspaper. With this tho, Many journalists were arrested for trying to put content in the newspaper that Japan did not allow . Russia and Britain are two other countries that strongly censored a lot of events. As time progressed, things like radio and television came along to play and made it harder to censor things compared to newspapers just due to the fact you can’t censor breaking news that easy because it’s being reported
