“For the half of a century no mortal has disturbed them. In peace requiescat” (Poe171), this ending also telling us a lot about Montersor ‘s evil character. After fifty years of the accident, he still happy about what he did, he is also proud of it and brags about how he went away with it without any punishment.
The end of this story is truly scary, and the most obvious impression is the strength of hatred, negative emotions and feelings towards Fortuanto. I think that this kind of emotion is very destructive for a person who experiences it. What's more, after the execution, Montresor doesn't feel anything but the satisfaction mixed with sarcasm, which may indicate that he is either evil, or obsessed. It is a kind of a touchy story because it shows how revenge can bring out the worst in people. Also it reminds us that if we stop to think about our actions, we would realize that violence is not the right way to solve problem but it can easily change you to a completely evil person like what happened with Montersor.
