In order for someone to survive the Salem witchcraft trials, they must be able to withstand the crucible and purify themselves when put under extreme heat and pressure. Anyone could be convicted at anytime of being a witch if someone caught them doing suspicious activities. Mary Warren, Reverend John Hale, and Abigail Williams were affected positively and negatively by the witchcraft trials because some were and some were not able to tough out the pressure. Once enough pressure is pushed onto something, it will soon break. A person in that witnessed extreme pressure was Mary Warren. She was placed into a position that she was obviously not used to being in. In Act 3 on line 573-589 Danforth is questioning Mary Warren and the text even says; “sensing a weakening”. This means that within seconds of Danforth questioning Mary Warren she is already beginning to feel the pressure and will soon be ready to break. Both definitions could technically be synonyms if the court trials are in Salem. Making it through the witch trials without being affected in some way was considered incredibly lucky. Being able to handle the pressure during the trials was considered very impressive. Mary Warren could not control herself when put into tough situations. Reverend Hale was able to do what he believed in and saved some lives and put order in the Salem court. Abigail Williams was selfish and was not able to take responsibility and could not accept the consequences therefore many people perished and many lives were ruined. It was truly life or death situations these people were put into, but most of the time, it wasn’t their lives being put at risk. During the Salem witch trials, over two hundred people were accused of using witchcraft and twenty people were executed. Even those who were innocent were hanged because they refused to falsely confess to the crime that they didn’t commit. Those who were accused of using witchcraft and confessed to doing it would presumably have their name blackened in the village. Despite women being the most vulnerable to being accused of witchery during this period, the most responsible person for the dreadful hangings is a woman. Her name is Abigail Williams, one of the primary accusers of the Salem witch trials of 1692.…

The Puritans brought with them their “strict and somber way of life” when they developed colonies in the newly-found continent of America (Miller 4). And a series of witch trials dominated the theocratic Salem during the late Seventeenth Century. These hearings were a manifestation of the clash between vengeance and honesty, where, based on the now ancient traditions, one’s reputation mattered more than their life. This story is portrayed in Arthur Miller’s Tragedy “The Crucible,” in which the characters’ names are “subjected to very high temperatures” in a “metal container,” where their true colors are shown. These names, rather than their real character, are considered of utmost importance in the community.…

In The Crucible it was Abigail Williams’s flaws – Dishonesty, Jealousy, and Lust – that led her to be most responsible for the tragedy of the witch-hunt in Salem. Abigail’s dishonesty by saying that she could see spirits of accused witches, jealousy towards Elizabeth because of her love of John Proctor, and her lust of John Proctor caused her to be the most responsible for the events that occurred. Her affair with John Proctor made her want to go through all sorts of crazy things just so she could be with him when he really didn’t even want her like she wanted…

Crucible stands for a situation of a severe trial. Many characters were put under a test each character having a different outcome. People act differently when they are put in an uncomfortable or stressful position. Even though the situation these people were placed in, people were able to act rationally and truthful, but in a group of good people, there is bound to be someone who would do deplorable acts. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail Williams is the most despicable character because she runs away from taking responsibility of starting Salem’s witchcraft frenzy, acts irrationally due to jealousy, and she lies about other people committing heinous crimes.…
