In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, there are many times that Harper Lee shows compassion, sympathy, and tolerance through the characters of the novel. Lots of times in the novel Harper Lee shows compassion, sympathy, or tolerance through key events in the story including: Atticus has compassion when he defends Tom Robinson, who is a black man, to the best of his abilities. Atticus shows Tolerance when Bob Ewell spits in his face, by not doing anything back. Jem shows sympathy to Tom Robinson when he is found guilty even though he did not do anything to Mayella Ewell. Harper Lee shows compassion through Atticus Finch when he defended Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson was on trial for raping Mayella Ewell, the daughter of Bob Ewell.
