This island is not populated, and the only ones who are there is them. They crashed landed on this island since during the story there was a war going on, and someone shot the plane down. I felt like the author choose the island is because he wanted to show a ensnared or entrapped feeling. The feeling of there might not be an escape. The island seemed like it was not known to man at that time. There's no trace of humans other than the kids and no housing or anything. Also I think the author is trying to show people’s first sense of taking what’s not theirs. When you were kids, how many time did your mom or dad told you to put something down that wasn’t yours? At least once. Maybe. The point is the kid who were one this island took advantage of the idea that no one owns this island. They destroyed environment, slaughtered animals. We can slowly see the possessive signature appearing. So Golding is saying, no matter where we live and where we land. As humans, we turn it into a pig’s den.
