How Does Dantes Change In The Count Of Monte Cristo

Edmond Dantes’ adversity helps his character in The Count of Monte Cristo because at the beginning of the story, Edmond is a playful yet innocent man who cared deeply about his friends and his father. After his is put on trial and sent to jail this toughened his character greatly. He also needed to create a new identity after he faked his death in jail and wants to seek revenge.

Before prison, Dantes was a worker on a ship. He worked very diligently and followed his captains orders and swiftly took his place when he was gone. He is very caring of his aging father, for example, he is very angered when the government takes extra taxes from his father and offers to give his father more money. He is also madly in love with Mercedes who lives in the same town as Dantes. Even though Mercedes’ cousin loves her, Dantes knows that she would choose him over her cousin. After prison, Dantes is a changed man. He has been through so much, seen so many things, and had been falsely accused of many things.

He is put into jail because of his father’s views on Napoleon. While in prison, Dantes experiences the death of his close friend and cell neighbor, Abbe. This makes Dantes fall into a deep depression and so he tries to make an escape plan. He makes the guards think he is the dead corpse they need to bury. So as they carry Dantes out of the cell, he realizes that they don’t bury him, but tie a cannonball to his foot and throw him into the ocean. He manages to escape the trap and swim to a nearby island. He now goes under disguise to find out that Caderousse really cared about him.
