How Does Weather / Climate Affect a Dog? All different kinds of weather can affect a dog's behavior and mood. However, like people, dogs can have their own unique quirks when it comes to reacting to weather. Some dogs are particularly scared of thunder, while others ignore it. Some dogs don't mind the dark winter months while others can appear depressed and sad.The same is true of other types of weather ,it just depends on the dog and how sensitive the dog is.Many dogs, including mine are scared of thunderstorms. Many dogs are afraid of thunder simply because they do not understand what it is. Now besides stroms and weather , how does the climate changes affect your dog? Appetite is affected through seasonal changes by the amount of daylight and the temperature triggers significantly cause hormonal changes in mammals, altering metabolism and influencing food intake. The lengthening of daylight during the warmer Spring and Summer months signals changes to a part of the brain ,resulting in decreased food seeking behavior and shifts metabolism. As winter approaches, the opposite response occurs. Lower temperatures require greater energy consumption to maintain body temperature. The shortening of daylight during this time triggers the brain to promote food seeking behavior and alter metabolism in order to promote fat storage in preparation for lean food sources during the winter months. So it’s not surprising to see dogs wanting more food in the winter, and less in the summer. A common difference in climate change shown throughout dog is their coats (fur / hair).
