How Does Atticus Change In To Kill A Mockingbird

Decent Essays
To Kill A Mockingbird is a fictional novel written by Harper Lee that takes place in Maycomb, AL 1930s with Scout who is the narrator. During the beginning she was very nonthoughful about what she did. Later she changes the way she acts towards other like she didn't get in a fight when they kept calling her dad a niggerlover. In a way this shows how much she admires her father and how she finds him trusting and understanding. In the novel, Atticus is a fair and convincing person.

Atticus is good at convincing people to do the right thing. Atticus explains to Scout that if he chooses to go to school that her and Atticus will keep reading together.“do you know what compromise is he asked If you'll concede the necessity of going to school, well go on reading every night just as we always have”(Lee 41). This shows he is convincing because he's able to tell his daughter that just because someone says that you can't do something that it will change what you can do then.

Atticus treats everyone the same way when he's in court. According to the judge, Atticus has “... done business in the court for years and years, and Mr.Finch is always courteous to everybody. He's not trying to mock you, he's trying to be polite. That's just his way” (judge 243). He explains that no matter what kind of person is in the court, that he treats them the same way.

Today we proved that Atticus is a fair and convincing person. My two thesis statements and quotes prove that Atticus is a fair and convincing person. This book helps others understand what kind of person others can be and how people affect others in a better

The writer invites us to see Atticus as a respectable man, giving and at the same time earning respect to everybody in Maycomb. He demonstrates a very welcoming, dignified and friendly, but also headstrong personality; this makes it difficult for people to stand opposite him. He tells his children to disguise the dirt covered snowman that resembles Mr Avery shows Atticus protecting the dignity of Mr Avery. One of the immediately noticeable features about Atticus’s relationship with Jem and Scout is that he allows his children to call him by his name Atticus rather than the more formal ‘father’ or the informal closeness of ‘Dad’. It seems to be how he chooses to bring up his children, not in a sentimental way but as thoughtful young people…

In “To Kill a Mockingbird” Harper Lee repetitively uses the term “if” as an association of Scout Finch’s depiction of her father Atticus. This repetition parallels and connects to the poem “If” by Rudyard Kipling. The stanzas of the poem can all be linked to different occasions in the novel and come together to create an impacting characterization of Atticus in the eyes of Scout. This characterization develops Atticus as a person who is, to everyone, filled with integrity and wisdom Atticus’ integrity is seen on page 100 when he says, “If I didn’t [defend Tom Robinson] I couldn’t hold my head up in town, I couldn’t represent this country in legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again” (Lee).…

Atticus can be recognized as an authoritative parent by his devotion, and nurturing qualities. This style of parenting is democratic, as the parent takes responsibility for their children and are willing to take questions and consider their ideas. Atticus uses this method of discipline as he guides Scout and Jem, and is supportive and understanding, versus punitive. In the novel, he explains that, “...they come to me for answers instead of listening to the town.” (Lee page 117)…
