How Do You Use Self-Talk In Cross Country

Decent Essays
I have practiced a form of psychological skills training by using self-talk before and during my cross country meets. Before my meets just simple thinking to myself “I am going to run well today” or something of that nature would help boost my confidence before the meet. During meets I would also use self-talk to try and push through the remainder of the race. Usually during the first mile or so of a cross country meet I wouldn’t have any problems, but at the half way point or on the final point I would give myself a little pep talk to try and finish. I think this self-talk really helped me during the cross country seasons because there would be many times I would want to slow down or stop, but by using self-talk I would be able to push through

“Life Coaching: A Cognitive Behavioural Approach” Summary Michael Neenan and Windy Dryden, the authors of “Life Coaching: A cognitive behavioural approach, second edition” (2014) offer a pragmatic, evidence-based method of coaching based on the concept of cognitive behavioral therapy. The authors discuss the sequence of emotional causation and how—in fact—one’s thoughts affect one’s emotion and thus, one’s behavior. Neenan and Dryden (2014) report that most coaching clients have an external attribution style regarding their emotions (i.e. - they embrace the misconception that other people or events are responsible for how they feel). To substantiate this, the authors give reference to Dr. Albert Ellis’ ABC model that explains how emotional upset—in relation to negative events—is shaped by the thoughts or beliefs concerning the event, which has a greater impact than the event itself.…

Discussion Questions for Sports Studies Discussion 1: (112)1.I would like to improve my self-esteem in my relationships with teammates in a sporting environment. In some ways, I am very confident in my work ethic, but I have trouble with a deeper emotional connection with people. I really need to build more self-confidence in my ability to make friends and trust myself to be a good friend in building intimate relationships. In sports, the idea of teamwork is a major part of this projection of self-esteem in the effort to build trusting relationships with others. Therefore, I need to develop greater self-esteem to increase the potential for healthy and trusting relationships in terms of sporting events in a team-orientated environment.…

As an African American woman, people tend to doubt my ability to do certain things because of my race and gender. I have learned to not live in their narrow perceptions of me but instead break through those barriers, not just to prove it to them but also to myself. Though the saying is cliché I do whole heartedly believe that if you put in enough effort and time into anything you can achieve your goals. This was the belief I had when I entered into my city’s pageant. There was a girl running in my division who had won a previous title for the teen division two years before.…

The biggest struggle I’ve had to overcome is a personal one. No, I did not have to raise myself out of poverty or stand up to any injustice being committed but for me at least it was a struggle. When I was little I had a terrible stutter/speech impediment or whatever you want to call it. Think of the guy from The Kings Speech but less Royal and without an academy award. I would speak too fast, with a stream of partial words and syllables pouring out of my mouth occasionally tripping up and stopping and stuttering mid-sentence.…

I know I have trouble with being sure of myself and being confident in what I can do on the field. Although, I am a player that wants to be successful more than anything else in the world I am willing to go through anything and everything you can think of if it will make me a better athlete. When I read Coach Wooden’s book I realized you need poise and confidence in order to reach all the success you want and that really changed me, because I have that motivation and that drive to be successful in every way that I can. Also, poise and confidence weren’t just on the pyramid of success they were at the very top on the second row on this pyramid, so that just goes to show that confidence and poise are two things I really should work on as a person and as an athlete if I want to reach all the potential I know I can. Since I am motivated to be the best I can be, since I have that competitive fire to have all the potential in the world I read this book…

Areas that I feel like I have improved in during this communications 101 course is becoming more confident in speaking in front of a small crowd, learning how to write speeches, and learning how to research and prepare for speeches. Everyone 's fear is public speaking. I avoided taking this class for the longest time just because I did not want to have to take a class where its entirety was just about speaking in front of people and doing a handful of speeches being my primary grade. I needed to take this class for when I transfer over to Arizona State University in the fall of 2017 so getting this class out of the way now at the University of Nevada was more of an ideal plan rather than taking it at ASU. This class is a core pre-requisite…

Subsequently, through the skills that I have acquired in my life, I know how more success I am. Back to high school days-when I had to do speeches, the difficult part was when you have to stand up and speak loud. At first, I was a very shy person, and my speeches were so bad because I used to get scared, especially when I used to stand up in front of all the class; most of my speeches went like that. However, we had a speech where you have to talk about twenty-two minutes and stand up in front of all the students. This exemplifies that I have to work hard in order to be good at doing the presentation.…
