Unabomber: Mass Hysteria and Mental Health Stereotypes.

Stereotypes around those with mental health concerns are the cause of heated debates all around America and have been for years. Unabomber was a schizophrenic revolutionary known as Ted Kaczynski. He was a societal outcast and executed radical ideas horrifically by sending mail bombs in America for 17 years. He claimed that the industrial revolution began societal downfall and acquired the name, Unabomber, by bombing mostly universities and airlines. Despite his targeting of those who had a role in industrialization, his actions caused mass hysteria throughout the United States. This was due to the terroristic nature of his'revolution

The bombings began in 1978 and lasted until 1996 when Kaczynski was captured by the FBI after releasing a manifesto in the newspaper and being identified by his brother. This manifesto was a take on the effect of technology, "The document condemned industrialization, saying it led to ‘widespread psychological suffering’ and had caused such environmental damage and alienation that modern society ought to be destroyed. It advocated “a revolution against the industrial system” (qtd. Albeck-Ripka and Betts). Kaczynski made strong points about the Industrial Revolution but they were disregarded, as society would not look past his ways of implementing a'revolution' and his mental illness. Kaczynski was indeed a revolutionary, but was pinned as a villain with no common sense or rational points. The Unabomber Manifesto raised legitimate concerns about the consequences of technological advancement. However, society predominantly focused on Kaczynski's methods rather than engaging with his critiques of modern society. His …show more content…
