The Tet Offensive was a lunar New Year’s celebration that lasted for three days and occurred on January 30, 1968. On this day, the North Vietnamese army attacked South Vietnam, taking many South Vietnamese people by surprise. People, who were believed to be loyal to the South Vietnamese government, were executed. The Tet Offensive was military defeat for North Vietnam; nevertheless, it was a victory for South Vietnam and the United States. Vietnamization was when the United States began to slowly withdraw their troops from Vietnam and the South Vietnamese army began to take over the numerous war attempts. On January 27, 1973, an agreement was finally reached when the United States would stop participating and helping in the Vietnam War. Then North Vietnam captured South Vietnam’s capital, Saigon, in April of 1975, and South Vietnam became a communist country, ending the Vietnam War.
