America’s history is filled with numerous wars and conflicts all over the world; then again their main conflict remains their own Civil War. It is argued that the US Civil War (1861-1865) was characterized by certain unresolved issues: whether the US was to be a confederation of sovereign states or an united nation with a sovereign unified government; and whether this state, known for its declaration of equality and freedom for all men, would continue to be one of the largest slaveholding states or not. In essence, it can be argued that the war was a determining factor in the way the nation developed. The war began on April 12, 1861 and ended on May 10, 1865; it is assumed or argued that The US Civil War was caused by the hard- edged disputes between the northern (free) and southern (“slave”) states over the power of government and the issue of slavery within the territories. Nonetheless, the northern states were able to go out victorious and enabled the unification of the states into the United States of America, meanwhile ending slavery and enabling equality among all men. However, everything has a cost, and in this occasion the cost was over half a million lives. …show more content…
The role of slavery during this war was significant, besides being one of the main reasons for conflict it was also a contributing factor that empowered the northern states to yield victory; basically, it was just a rational reaction by the ones held as slaves to turn against their masters and the southern states and to join and support the northern states in war.
