Dante Alighieri was one of the three fathers of Italian literature and he along with Boccaccio and Petrarch greatly impacted Italian culture and literature. All three had close ties to Florence. Dante is most known for “The Divine Comedy”. This epic poem “The Divine Comedy” consisted of three sections, Hell, Purgatory and Heaven. In the first section, hell or the inferno, Dante rebukes and despises sin. Dante must first experience Hell before he can experience the opposite. Dante often mentions that sinners get punished for their sin based on how it was viewed in their time period. In “The Divine Comedy”, Dante confronted many issues that affected his own time period, “Dante confronted in the Commedia a knot of problems which deeply affected European civilisation at the end of the Middle Ages”

Boccaccio is most known for his incredible story telling skills. Boccaccio’s true calling was poetry and not banking as his father would have hoped. In the “Decameron”, there are many stories that were were invented by Boccaccio but sound very familiar. The “Decameron” is one that is based on the Black Plague on the events that transpired in result of it. Even though Boccaccio was not around for the Black Plague, his stories are extremely detailed as if he was present. Some stories include, Chichibio, Calandrino, Ciappelletto, Andreuccio, Fra Cipolla, and Frederigo. All the stories are about other people that Boccaccio created, none are of himself. All the stories are filled with imagery. In all these stories, there is always a valuable lesson to be learned. Most of these stories could happen in real

I felt like Canto V (2nd Circle of Hell) demonstrated Dante's passion for using literature as a mode of influencing his readers. I love Canto V because it paints a picture in your head of a romantic story which is eventually consumed with sin and suffering. Not that I like sin and suffering (I don't), but Dante's mastery of love poetry is astounding. Canto V is a romantic love story in which a woman named Francesca tells about how she fell secretly in love with another man outside of marriage.…

Dante Alighieri’s Inferno was one of the first major works in what would later be known as standard, Tuscan Italian. While the Inferno was important, it was not the first, sole nor main cause of the rise of Tuscan Italian. Many authors both before and after the time of Dante were just as, if not more, influential in the rise of the Tuscan Italian dialect as Dante Alighieri’s work. Although influential in ending the Latin language’s monopoly of written language in Italy and extending the influence of the Tuscan dialect, Dante’s Inferno was preceded by the common use of “vulgar latin” in both conversation and writing.…

    2) How does Dante use material from classical mythology and classical literature? Charon, the Furies, and Virgil’s discourse on Fortune egregious examples of Dante’s cultural syncretism. Dante uses the various fantastic and hellish beasts that populate Roman, Greek, Latin, and other classical mythologies to illustrate the guardians of the afterlife that he is attempting to portray to the audience. Charon, the navigator of the River Styx, is called back to do an encore of the job he had done for Inais and bring yet another living soul into the world of the dead, though in this case it is the hellish Inferno of Dante’s Christianity dominated creation and not the Underworld of Greek and Roman lore. Further, each circle of hell Dante describes…

Journeys can be taken many ways; some people take the path less traveled, and some people take the easy way out. Dante happens to be on a journey that is less traveled by exploring the depths of Hell in the Inferno. The epic poem’s story is about self-realization and transformation; it sees Dante over coming many things to realize he is completely different from the start of the inferno journey. From the beginning to the end of the book Dante starts having a personality change from the way he acts towards people; realizing that his true self is much less sympathetic towards people who deserved to be punished. Another personal change was due to, Dante seeing many high religious characters in hell that change Dante’s outlook on religious views…
