Many popular words and phrases commonly used in the present can be traced back to one of William Shakespeare’s 191 works. One could come up with 100 commonly used phrases and find at least half of them in Shakespeare’s writing. Shakespeare invented over 1700 words; never used in the English language before his time. Shakespeare claimed the first use of a knock knock joke when he wrote it in one of his more popular plays, Macbeth. The poet spent half of his life writing thirty-seven plays and 154 sonnets; creating a suspicion that he did not write them alone. Three of the many phrases coined by Shakespeare are “A wild goose chase” from Romeo and Juliet, “For goodness sake” from Henry VIII, and “Break the ice” from The Taming of The Shrew.
