In the beginning of Lord of the Flies the boys elected one of the boys, who was named Ralph, to be their leader. In the beginning the chief was the only permanent job, all the other boys had small temporary jobs, but none they ever stayed with. Early man also only had a couple jobs to start out. The main two were hunters and gatherers. The hunters went and hunted for meat while the gatherers collected food that they could find from fruits, trees and certain herbs. In the HMH Social Studies World History textbook, it reads,”Humans survived by hunting game and gathering edible plants” (World History 23). Both the boys and early man had a very small amount of jobs that were done, but as time progressed the amount of jobs increased. In Lord of the Flies new jobs such as hunters, fire tenders, food gatherers and builders were made. The builders are,”[Ralph] ‘n Simon built the [shelters]” (Golding 80). The choir boys are both the hunters and the fire tenders. Jack offers them to be hunters when Ralph asks,”What do you want them to be” (Golding 23) and he offers them to be fire tenders when he says,”We’ll be responsible for keeping the fire going” (Golding 43). Even the littluns, the smallest group of boys, gather fruits from the fruit trees. The boys have developed more jobs than what they started with, which allows them to divide work in a fair way. Early man mirrored the boys development of jobs. *According to Steven L. Tuck, early man had jobs such as,”Teachers, artisans, merchants, rulers, priest, scribes and farmers”. Just like the boys’ civilization, early man developed jobs that allowed them to advance and

Denica @ Myat Thazin Khine Block – D 8 / 24 /2015 Journal-C: Question 2 Lord of the Flies is a novel, representing the weakness of man’s enterprises, showing us how men are born savages at heart, and the fact that corruption of men had nothing to do with civilization. J.J Rousseau had once said that “Nothing can be more gentle than man in his primitive state.” According to his statement, Rousseau believed that all men are born innocent, gentle and guiltless but eventually turned malevolence and savage within the years of living in the civilized world. In his eyes, he supposed that the existence of science and arts in our humanity had ultimately corrupted people from improving themselves.…

In “Lord of the Flies”, author William Golding includes a representation of society without civilization, eventually causes savagery. For example, during a feast, Jack and the other hunters begin dancing around in a circle and chanting, which eventually leads them to savagery. “Now out of the terror rose another desire, thick, urgent, blind,” (Golding 152). Like Indians, the hunters perform a ritual to kill and eat the slaughtered pig, this shows readers how Jack and his hunters become more separated from the civilized world and more like savages. This idea is presented superbly in Lord of the Flies. William Golding’s view on civilization within this book is positive, because civilization kept the boys alive, and without it, chaos surrounds the boys.…

Civilizations contain many aspects that govern the fate of them. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding, using allegory, establishes a microcosm with several aspects that correlate to those of civilization. On a deserted island in the Pacific Ocean, several British schoolboys crash-land. Through the use of the stranded, unchaperoned boys, he shows how the presences of these aspects affect civilization. He brilliantly uses simple objects such as the conch, the glasses, and the fire to illustrate these features of civilization.…
