Henry Edwin Sewall was born on August 26, 1848 in St. Augustine, Florida. But he grew up in Maine. He was the son of a lawyer and author of many historical documents. Since his bold decision of becoming a merchant-marine backfired after three years when he was one of the four people to survive after it sank near Cape Hatteras, Henry Sewall decided to settle down and finally call a place home. On his property, he built his house (which would later become a historic site), the peninsula’s second post office, and a dock that jutted out into the India River. Henry faced a challenge with the river, the manatee grass on the bottom was incredibly tall and the river was very shallow. Also according to Sewall’s point, Henry Sewall said “It closed up occasionally and acted very much like the Jupiter Inlet.” Henry Sewall made many bold decisions and had many bold actions during his lifetime.
Sewall’s point is the perfect place for an evening stroll on the beach. Sewallspont.org says, “Sewall’s Point is known for its natural beauty.” And the name says it all! Henry inspired many young and old to take bold actions and face their fears, and explore new horizons. To this day Sewall’s point has shops, boat docks, and beautiful scenery.
