In high school, Lee found herself interested in English literature. According to Biography editors, Lee was a member of the literary honor society and glee club. Throughout Harper Lee’s college years, she joined the school’s newspaper and its humor magazine called The Rammer Jammer. “To Kill a Mockingbird” was published in July 1960 and picked up by the Book-of-the-Month club and received the Pulitzer prize award. Author Roberta Baxter states that as a child, Lee became close friends with Truman Capote, who visited town each summer and who also grew as a successful writer. Lee later based the character of Dill on Capote. At the same time, Lee published “To Kill a Mockingbird”, Capote was also working on a book “In Cold Blood” which was based off a murder in a family that took place in Kansas. Lee traveled to Kansas with Capote and helped him complete interviews and gather information on the case. Just as Lee based a character on her friend, Capote returned the favor by basing the character of Idabel in “Others Voice, Other Rooms” on Lee. Capote also dedicated “In Cold Blood” to Lee. (Baxter,
