How Did Hammurabi Set Of Laws

Hammurabi’s Code was a set of laws that ruled the people of Mesopotamia in the eighteenth century. King Hammurabi gained control of the region where chaos and disorder reigned. The “Law Code of Hammurabi” was a huge slab of stone inscribed with the law codes, or decisions made my Hammurabi during his 40 year reign as King. Although there were other laws pre-dating Hammurabi’s Code, it is one of the most complete set of laws from ancient Mesopotamia. Hammurabi’s code tells about the economic, and social factors, as well as the religious beliefs of ancient Mesopotamia. The black stone stela containing Hammurabi’s Code was carved from a single, four-ton slab of diorite. At the top of the stone is a carving of Hammurabi and Shamash, the Babylonian god of justice. “Atop the Steele, in sculptural relief, Hammurabi receives the blessing of Shamash, the sun god.” The rest of the seven-foot-five-inch monument is covered with columns of cuneiform script, containing the 282 articles of law. “The purpose was to celebrate his sense of justice and wisdom of his rule”. …show more content…
This ensured that a person caught omitting a crime will be punished for this crimes, in hopes of them never being committed again. The basis of Hammurabi’s law is that of like retaliation. The law offers protection to all classes of Babylonian society; it seeks to protect the weak and the poor, including women, children, and slaves, against unfairness at the hands of the rich and powerful. For example: if someone falsely accuses another, he will be punished for it. As harsh as some of these laws are, there is some contrast to the laws we abide by
