Moving onward, I would like to discuss the ancient Greeks contribution to Western civilization, seeing as how crucial their presence in history has been. Their achievements in art, philosophy, history, and science all helped to shape the growth of society as we know it. Many of these cultural aspects began with Greece’s Golden Age. It was a time of peace and cultural prosperity, and it was the time which most of Greece’s contributions to Western civilization originated. Their theory of government consisted of a system that favors many instead of the few. They implemented a type of democracy in which the citizens all had equal opportunity to serve the public and the most distinguished citizens would make political decisions, with the opinion of the public in mind. The democratic tradition in city-states such as Athens embodied the ideals of legal equality, personal freedom and governance by the people. These principles have been influential around the globe, shaping political institutions, and revolutionary movements. This new form of government made way for countless other forms of government in which we later developed, refined, and instituted into a functional system.
Ancient Greek architects strove for the precision and excellence of workmanship that are the hallmarks of Greek art in general. The formulas they invented as early as the sixth century B.C. have influenced the architecture of the past two millennia. Much of modern architecture utilizes the techniques used in Ancient Greece. Modern buildings which exhibit some form of order commonly use the same distinctive Greek columns and other architectural
