Garrett Morgan was the inventor of the traffic light. He was born on March 4, 1877 in Claysville, Kentucky to Sydney Morgan and Eliza Reed, who were both former slaves. At age 16, he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio to find a job. He began repairing sewing machines for a clothing manufacturer and became curious at how things worked. As A result, he invented a belt faster for sewing machines. Morgan married his first wife in 1896 and together they started the Cleveland Association of Colored Men. By 1909, Morgan opened two business, a sewing machine and shoe repairing shop and Morgan’s Cut Rate Ladies Clothing Store. One advantage is that the traffic light alerted drivers when it is safe to proceed and stop. Before the traffic light, there wasn’t an efficient way or signal to control traffic. Also, Morgan’s invention helped reduced accidents at intersections. But, Morgan’s invention came with disadvantages.
