A Life of Misery into Misery as Literature: Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe is said to be one of the greatest writers of our time as he is considered by others as the "father of horror and mystery" (Hutchisson). His poems and stories chill the blood of many from this day on. His works have been honored and studied since his death for over a hundred years. He can be referred as a true American genius of our time. However, Edgar Allan Poe differs from your typical writer since he wrote to support himself throughout poverty and his writing habits were heavily influenced from certain aspects of his life. Poe led a rough life full of tragedy, sorrow, and fate, but had some wonderful events that balanced it altogether.
Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston Massachusetts, to parents, David and Elizabeth Poe. Edgar was the second child out of three children. He has an elder brother named William Henry Leonard Poe who was born on January 30, 1807 and has a younger sister named Rosalie Mackenzie Poe who was born on December 20, 1810 (Hutchisson). Edgar at the time was only six and was enrolled at a top of the line private school there where he exceeded amazingly with his academics. During the next few years, John Allan’s business was not doing so well which led on the family moving back to Richmond in 1820 (Hutchisson). Edgar at the time was getting much closer to his foster mother, Fanny. She was the best mother like figure during his childhood that infact Edgar was calling her “Ma” (Hutchisson). However, Fanny got really ill and was locked up in her room most of the time. To Edgar, the thought of losing his family once again is what he feared the most (Hutchisson).
