Columbus’ Men held part of the responsibility for threatening and killing the Tainos. They were the people who were commanded by Christopher Columbus to “help” conquer the Tainos. In document 2, it says “They laid bets as to who, with one stroke of the sword, could split a man in two or could cut off his head or spill our his entrails(internal organs) with a single stroke of the pike.” The men viewed the Tainos as something that they could amuse themselves with by killing them. In document 2, it says “They took infants from their mothers’ breasts, snatching them by the legs and pitching them head first against the crags(rocks) or snatched them by the arms.”…

Due to the different resources available in the colonies along with the European’s primary goal, the patterns of interactions greatly varied between the European settlers and the Native Americans depending on the location. In New York, the interactions centered primarily around trading war products and fur while, in New Spain, the settlers mainly focused on spreading their religion and starting missions. The interactions in the two regions developed in similar way since every group wanted to strengthen their regions politically and economically by creating alliances and increasing trade; however, they did differ due to how the Europeans in the west mainly came to North America in pursuit of independence while the settlers of New Spain wanted to spread their religion. Both New York and New Spain were heavily populated by native groups before European colonization. For instance the Iroquois villages varied in population, from several hundred to two thousand.…
Columbus faked a report and promises. He took about seventeen ships with about twelve hundred men along side with him. In Haiti, Columbus believed that the Arawaks are slaves and he was able to steal gold. Battle occurred at Fort Navidad with the Indians. Sailors were found dead and Columbus’s men were taking women and children as slaves, using them for sex and labor.…
There is a lot that has happened in the past, good and bad. Some historical events bring us to where we are now today. Although, some events and historical figures get overlooked in History classes. However, one event or person that does not get overlooked during the discussion of the past is Christopher Columbus being accredited with finding America. We all know that Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492, trying to get to India for spices and he happened to “discover” America.…
Before Columbus embarked on his trip to sail across the Atlantic Ocean, a Norse seaman, Leif Eriksson had the first glimpse of what life could be for Europeans that crossed the ocean and reached the New World. History has told us that European’s in the Middle Ages, weren’t necessarily known for being great adventurers. But as time went on, European’s had the greatest adventure of all; coming to the New World.…

At his time, slavery wasn’t a completely horrible thing to do, yet that doesn’t mean he wasn’t bad. Even if your society thinks something might be fine, what he did was torture other human beings and kill them if they didn’t bring him enough wealth. Christopher Columbus was one of the main reasons that Natives are called Indians, and were treated the way they were. I drew chains to show how the natives were enslaved and sometimes even beaten by the Europeans. Columbus may have been a “hero” to some, but not to the first…
It seems as if Columbus's reign of terror started instantaneously, the first Arawak Indians that swam to the boats to greet Columbus and his crew were taken as prisoners and ordered to guide Columbus toward a source of gold. Columbus observed that there were visible bits of gold in the rivers and mistakenly assumed that Cuba was rich with gold. Columbus returned in 1495 with more ships and a much larger crew. 500 Arawak Indians were taken as slaves and roughly 200 of the slaves died on the way back to Spain. Columbus traveled to Cicao, a province in Haiti, where he forced everyone over the age of fourteen years old to collect a certain amount of gold in three months.…
People debate the oncoming of Spanish and Portuguese as being an encounter. The truth is that the Portuguese and Spanish had a dramatic negative impact on the Native Americans lives. They were changed forever because of their harsh attempts to Christianize the Americas. The Spanish empire gained control of much of the Americas and sent Spanish colonists there to enlist the help of encomiendas or Native American laborers. The natives had to be profitable to the Spanish in the eyes of the crown.…
Columbus tore children from their parents, husbands from wives. On board Columbus’ slave ships, hundreds died; the sailors tossed the Indian bodies into the Atlantic.” (Weatherford, “Examining the Reputation of Christopher…
Although Columbus Day is a national holiday honoring a famous historic figure, many people take it as an opportunity to hang out with friends, finish homework, or even catch up on sleep. Columbus was known for many brutal attacks and events in history such as multiple rapes, enslaved people, and deaths. It is also well-thought that Columbus was the first one to discover the Americas , where many people don't know that the native Americans where the first to arrive in America. Instead of rewarding Columbus for all of these brutal and terrifying actions, we should abolish Columbus Day because of all of Columbus's lies and mislead ideas. When Columbus came to the Americas, in addition to bringing multiple slaves, he also disrupted their lifestyles.…
However, after realizing the valuable profit of enslaving Native Americans, more indigenous groups were forced to succumb to this dehumanizing labor. Explorer, Christopher Columbus, boasted about the potential of wealth and economic benefits to his Spanish monarchs (Ojibwa). Overall, Europeans enslaved Native Americans that were war captives, eventually resulting in an increase of economic potential and overall…
The exploration and colonization boom of the 16th-17th centuries permanently connected Europe and the Americas, a connection that eventually formed the modern “West.” This new global connection not only created positive effects, but it also created a few negative ones as well. The European and American perspectives vastly changed because of this new connection that was created. Before the connection came to be, Europeans believed there were multiple continents, unaware of how big the world truly was. The Europeans believed that new trade routes, adventures, and the spread of religion could be a good aspect to come out of exploring the world, but it was also dangerous, unknown, and time-consuming.…
