After being forced to marry Ptolemy XII and co-rule Egypt, Cleopatra arranged to meet with Julius Caesar in hope of developing an alliance between Rome and Egypt. Later Cleopatra was able to overthrow Ptolemy, which forced him into hiding and become the only leader in Alexander. Following the alliance, Cleopatra borne a son with Caesar shortly after Caesar was assassinated so Cleopatra returned to Alexandria. After returning to Egypt, the alliance broke through so she devised a new plan to ally with Rome involving Marc Anthony, who was one of Julius’s best friends and he also took over Rome after Caesar was killed. Her death and many affairs sparked up many famous plays for example Antony and Cleopatra, which was written by Shakespeare in 1607. Today plays and movies are still being shown that have inspirations from Cleopatra. Cleopatra has a lasting legacy from being one of the only female leaders in a male-dominated society.
