“General of the Continental Army, George Washington appeared on Mrs. Ross's doorstep around the first of June, 1776, with two representatives of Congress, Colonel Ross and Robert Morris” (Legend of Betsy Ross). After all of this Betsy has been gifted with a Philadelphia bridge named in her honor. Not all people thought she made the American Flag. Well, there is many other people that could have made the flag. Like, Margaret Manny, who is also credited with creating the flag. There is also Rebecca Young, Anne King and Cornelia Bridges, all who were known for flag making. Also, the flag maker could be William Barrett, Hugh Stewart, Francis Hopkinson or William. There is no documentation other than oral tradition to say whether or not that Betsy made the very first American flag. When historians look into this they see no evidence of her making it but none of her not. There were many other upholsterers that could have very well made the flag themselves. The first mention of the story of Betsy Ross in history is in her grandson’s writings in 1870. According to her story the Congressional Committee called upon her at her shop in May of 1776 and she either finished the flag in late May or early June.…
