How Did Basketball Start?

Tons of people know about the sport of basketball, and how it is played. It is played with a basketball and a basketball hoop. It is also played with five people on each team. To advance the ball up the court you can pass or dribble. But do you know how it started? Over 300 million people play basketball around the world because of Dr. James Naismith.

Dr. James Naismith invented basketball. He lived in Canada then moved to Massachusetts where he became a physical educator at a YMCA. In 1891, Dr. Naismith was told he had to create a game that would keep athletes busy during the winters. “With a two week deadline, Dr. Naismith decided to invent a game of skill, finesse and accuracy, rather than one that relied on pure strength,” (“Who

To this day we use ten of them with signals and names, like traveling and foul. The sport was played passing a soccer ball. With nine players on each team, you could only pass to advance the ball. There were two peach baskets that hung at each end of the court, at the height of ten foot. When you shot the ball it would be retrieved from either of the peach baskets.

The sport basketball has progressed a lot over the years. In 1891 two peach baskets were used as buckets that the players would shoot the ball into. In 1913 the first basketball hoops came out. It wasn’t until the 1950’s that a guy named Tony Hinkle started looking for a ball that the officials and players would see easier to see (“Basketball Equipment and History” 1). The first games was officially played on December 21st in 1891.

Since Dr. James invented basketball, it has spread around the world, now millions of people play it. It started by passing and shooting a soccer ball. Now we dribble, shoot, and pass a basketball, and we shoot into a basket with an open end. It went from nine player to five players, and passing to dribbling the
