We will first be talking about Abraham Lincoln’s family. We will also be trying to support the statement. “Abraham Lincoln was the most important president in American history. Some people might not think that he had an effect on anything, but I think that he had a pretty big effect on U.S. presidents today. I chose Lincoln because I think he’s a great example to the present presidents still today.
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12th 1809 in a one-room log cabin until they moved when Lincoln was 7, to Indiana in a one-room log cabin in Kentucky. Before he was elected president, he was a very hard working young man. He went out and he and his father worked together to try to build things. He would help make boats to go fishing. He would walk to school, which was about 2 miles away, every morning. So overall, he was a great man, and the he ran for president, so he wasn’t home as much anymore. He was the 16th U.S. President.. In 1858, he was chosen to run against Stephen A. Douglas for the U.S. senate. Then He became president when he was 52 years old in 1860 and again ran against Stephen A. Douglas. Even though he only got 40% of the votes, he became president. Soon after he became president, there was about 3 million black slaves in the southern states. Most people were not excited to have a president who hated slavery. So once everyone became mad, 11 southern states withdrew from the U.S. and formed their own government, which was called the Confederate States of America. He served as president from March 4th, 1861 - April 15th, 1865, until he was assassinated. On April 12, 1861, Confederate soldiers fired on Fort Sumter which was a fort in South Carolina, began the civil War. He led the war, trying to keep the country united. So during the war, he wrote the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared that all slaves in the Confederate states were
