A hotdog is a sandwich. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, a sandwich is defined as a "A sandwich is a meat or poultry filling between two slices of bread, a bun or a biscuit." This counts a hotdog as a sandwich. However I do not like this definition personally because it does not count classical sandwiches such as a PBJ. I go by the mediterranean dictionary’s definition, which is “two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between”. This also considers a hot dog as a sandwich. In fact, the Merriam-Webster dictionary came out and stated that a hotdog is in fact a sandwich.

Well first we must go back to the definition of sandwich. As mentioned earlier, the Merriam-Webster defines a sandwich as “two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between”. But the Merriam-Webster also defines a sandwich as “one slice of bread covered with food”. This considers a hot dog as a sandwich despite it’s open face. But according to “The Atlantic” a hot dog is not a sandwich because it is laid down vertically instead of horizontally. Even though the hot dog is not eaten in the same manner as most sandwiches, it is eaten in the same manner as a gyro. The definition of a gyro to the Merriam-Webster is “a sandwich especially of lamb and beef, tomato, onion, and yogurt sauce on pita bread”, and as many know a gyro is laid down vertically. So why would a gyro be a sandwich and a hot dog not be a sandwich? Because of this I do not find “The Atlantic”’s argument as a legitimate
