My Favorite Short Story

So far the story I like the most is “Hostage” by Joyce Carol Oates. The reason this is my favorite story so far because it is suspenseful. A way it is suspenseful is when she got taken by the guy no one had a clue what was going to happen next. In the story it shows a suspense part it says “By now the librarian from the sound adult room had emerged, and another women was poking her head around the corner…”(Oates1207). That shows that the lady didn't know what was going to happen. Another reason i like this story is because of the events that happened. An event that happened was when the man asked for her to come to him. In the book he says “Little girl? Eh? Little girl?—where’re you going”(Oates1206)? In the story

The Power and Control Wheel provides eight different behavioral categories that an abusive partner uses in order to keep all the power and control in the relationship (Robinson, 2013). To a person that has not experienced this type of relationship violence, these behavioral categories may be clear signs of abuse and need of help. However, these categories can often be unrecognizable and/or normal to a person experiencing them (Robinson, 2013). In Sipe’s (2013) book, “I am Not Your Victim”, each tactic is seen within Beth and Sam’s relationship. Beginning with the category of economic abuse, this tactic gives the abuser the control over the victim’s freedom and ability to support themselves (Robinson, 2013).…

The character of the girl is not the impressive part of the story, it is the way that Campbell makes the reader feel like they have a bond with the character with classified descriptions of the girl. Campbell introduces the true characters of the little girl’s parents through their direct relationship with the little girl. At the beginning of the story we only know the girl’s parents as regular parents, but as we go further in the story, Campbell begins to characterize how the relationship with her and her parents are important to the narrative. Campbell characterizes the girl’s dad as being a loving father who the girl usually relies on. She even has pink pajama pants that say “Daddy’s Girl”(Campbell 3).…

The book I read was Stolen Children, by Peg Kehret. This was one of my favorite books to read, there was always something new going to happen and I didn’t want to put it down. It was also so realistic, like I would think of myself in a type of situation like this and it’s just unreal to imagine it. Also, if you thought something was going to happen, you would be totally wrong and you wouldn’t believe how off you were in guessing what would happen next, which is why I liked this book so much.…

“Where Is Here?” is a short story by Joyce Carol Oates, which is about a stranger who visits the house of a family, and causes strange things to happen. The diction in this story is also a good example of how to use dialogue and word choice to create a mysterious atmosphere. The stranger says many weird things that make the reader wonder throughout the story, and a good example of this is when the mother asks if his mom is still alive, to which he accidentally responds with, “We’ve all been dead-they’ve all been dead-a long time.” The stranger’s slip of the tongue provides a little insight into what he really is and makes the reader start questioning things. How he also uses the word “dead”, instead of something such as “deceased” or “gone”,…

My favorite text from this semester was the story called “The Pardoner’s Tale” by Geoffrey Chaucer. This is my first favorite text from the semester because of how much Chaucer uses the character of the Pardoner to attack the Roman Catholic church. He makes the character of the Pardoner and Summoner very greedy; just as the church was in the 1300’s of Chaucer’s time. As history will already tell, the Roman Catholic church was greedy during the Middle Ages or Dark Ages. So this fits well into the story of the “Pardoner’s Tale.”…

    4. Setting and Time: The stranger was published in 1942 and takes place in French Algeria in the 1940’s. The french began invading Algeria in the 1830’s and by the 1940’s, Algiers was considered French territory. Because of this, French and Christian customs played a large role in societal expectations and anyone who did not conform to those values, was considered an outsider.…

My favorite story was Hangover by Jennifer Pashley. The idea of a hangover is something that everyone at some point in your life gets to experience, maybe because you had too much drink the night before or too much of a stressful day or night and the next day you are probably going to feel all types of symptoms depending on the type of hangover you have. A hangover is the other shoe. (Pashley, 2014,p.2) Is like the other side of the coin, most specifically the side you are not expecting when you flip a coin to make a decision, it can be life changing because you never know the consequences that can bring you because you never know when it’s going to happen. I just can say that hangover can be life changing for the better or the worse and…

Bondage Cabin So a few years ago my friend Tonya ask me what I be interested in a makeup job that would require my travel. As I mentioned before Tonya and I are no stranger to the BDSM world. And the destination of this makeup job that would require my travel would be located in a cabin in the woods, where a group of Trans/Cross Dressing individuals would be holding a Bondage weekend. My friend Tonya was a bit nervous about going to the cabin alone (without Val her mate) and not really knowing everyone at the cabin. I was a little nervous for her.…

As most people know, getting into a new relationship can be difficult. Trying to get your in-laws to like you can be a challenge, and cause some anxiety. Our reading this week was to read stories that discussed the conflicts and difficulties seen when having a new family. These writings told the stories of women who struggled with being in a new lifestyle and their struggles they had to face between their in-laws. A couple of the stories, like “The Language of Family” and “The Food Factory” were about the difficulty of the women and learning the Turkish language in order to communicate with their new families.…

The story from the Reader which I have taken inspiration from is 'A Rose for Emily'. What makes this story most appealing is its stream of consciousness style, anonymous narration and themes of memory and the past. William Faulkner's “A Rose for Emily” focuses on the life and death of Emily Grierson. Through a technique entitled 'stream of consciousness' the reader is provided with the thoughts of the narrator or character. The term stream of consciousness was initially coined by a psychologist, William James, in his research 'The Principles of Psychology'.…

This short story anthology is a collection of stories, which show step by step plot driven stories that follow traditional plot, but also being bad and dark, leaving the reader with a disturbing image, which does not replicate what many short stories are written about today. The stories I choose to include in my anthology are: “Where are you going Where have you been” by Joyce Carol Oates, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor, “The Other Place” by Mary Gaitskill, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’brien, “Jumper Down” by Don Shea, “Jens” by Ross Nervig and Encounters with the Unexpected Animals” by Anthony Johnson. All these stories share a dark element within them making them all connect, leaving a perfect fit for this anthology.…
