To contribute to the theme of madness Hamlet tells him the plan earlier to fake madness. Without Horatio’s actions like talking after soliloquies and seeing the ghost the reader wouldn’t be able to figure out that the Prince is acting mad and is not actually crazy. Horatio tries to stop Hamlet from dueling with Laertes and is worried for the life of the prince, but Hamlet already made up his mind. Hamlet had lost his father and now his fiancé, there was no bright future left for…
During the reading, Horatio implied that the Ghost is “guilty”, extravagant, and has an erring spirit. Horatio also warned Hamlet that the Ghost may bring him into madness due to the fact that this Ghost is also Hamlet's father, whom he was very close too. That is the reason why Hamlet is able to communicate with this ghost. This would bring madness to Hamlet because after the passing of his father, the Queen (hamlet’s mother), remarried very quickly to Hamlet’s uncle. From Hamlet’s point of view, this Ghost is trustworthy because it is also his own father, and that he is a great King.…
In the novel, Act Three, Scene Four, is the scene where Hamlet goes up into his mother's chamber because she has requested to see him. Polonius is up there also but when Hamlet comes he hides from him. Hamlet hears him and stabs into the arras Polonius has hidden behind, killing him. When Ophelia finds out that her father has died, by the one she thought she loved. She goes mad with grief.…
He talks about the vile and incestuous wedding that has occurred, about suicide and about the rankness and corruption within Denmark and the world, describing the world as an unweeded garden. However, the juxtapositions give his speech greater meaning. He compares his late father (King Hamlet) to his once uncle now (step) father (Claudius), as Hyperion to a satyr (I.ii.142). Hyperion was the Greek titan who was the father of the sun, dawn, and moon. He had virtues of honour, integrity, and nobility.…
Hamlet’s mood changes before and after Horatio tells him he saw his father yesternight by first there was a celebration and a lot of noise and Hamlet tells them what are you all doing this is not ok why are we celebrating and he does not agree with this celebration and people in that town count them all as drunk and when it was his first time to see the ghost he threaten to kill his best friend Horatio with his spear because he was stopping him from following the ghost. In addition Hamlet’s mood changes after by telling his friends to swear they won’t tell anyone what he was tell them and swear that they won’t tell anybody about the events that deal with the ghost. In addition Hamlet also tells them that he would be acting crazy and mad so they would know and tells them to swear they won’t tell no one about him acting this…
Why, what should be the fear… It waves me forth again. I’ll follow it” (Shakespeare 1.4.70-76). Horatio and Marcellus attempt to hold Hamlet back from leaving with the ghost, but Hamlet ultimately breaks free from their grasp and exeunt the scene with the ghost. Another important incident that shows Hamlet’s rashness is when he kills Lord Polonius with alacrity. In this moment, Hamlet believed that he was about to murder his uncle, King Claudius, but in turn accidentally killed Polonius.…
A critical lens is a perspective that the reader uses to examine a piece of literature. Different lenses look for unique details and aspects in the text, and help the reader find new information that may have never been discovered had the piece only been read through one single perspective. The archetypal lens is a critical viewpoint which allows the reader to identify places in a story which follow or deviate from universal patterns, also known as archetypes. Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, is a character who, as before mentioned, both follows and deviates from the archetype of the Hero’s Journey.…
The soliloquy of act 2 scene 2 is focused on inner struggles with revenge. Earlier in this scene, Hamlet asks the actors to recite the story of Priam. While viewing this play hamlet realized the flaw in all that he has been doing, or hasn’t been doing, to act revenge on Claudius. Claudius killed Hamlet's father and stole the crown and hamlet is the only one who knows so he hatches a plan. He has made a few attempts of Claudius' life but failed.…
Shakespeare begins with a few minor characters, Barnardo, Francisco, Marcellus and Horatio, standing guard and discussing having seen a ghost. This ghost, robed in armor, is described as being Old King Hamlet who has recently passed away. Shakespeare uses scene 1 act 1 to establish the credibility of the ghost; there must be a reason that two trained guards are palpably shaken and frightened. The audience then witnesses the ghost on stage, while one of the guards remarks that “it comes again” (I.i.49). Furthermore, Horatio, a scholar and a educated man of reason, also sees the ghost and exclaims that “It harrows [him] with fear and wonder” (I.i.53).…
Horatio is the only other person who not only saw the ghost but, he knew what King Hamlet's Ghost told Hamlet. He also had the job of watching Claudius, while the play was going on, in order to see if he showed his guilt. Lastly, at the end of the play, Hamlet gives Horatio the task of telling everybody why Hamlet had feigned madness and the murders of "… thou so many princes at a shot". (Act 5, Scene II, Line 358) Hamlet could not do it himself because he died along with other important characters.…
Multiple times in the play Hamlet gets positive advice from Horatio, who serves as superego. “Hamlet makes it apparent that he had discussed his misgivings about the Ghost with Horatio” (Reed 180). Reed goes on to discuss how much Hamlet respects Horatio; their relationship is one of the only things that tied Hamlet to reality. Horatio is Hamlet’s voice of reason in act one, scene four, when Horatio tries to convince him that he should not go and talk to the ghost alone because he doesn’t want anything bad to happen to Hamlet. Even though he was unsuccessful in keeping Hamlet from going with the ghost alone, just the fact that he tried but still respected Hamlet’s answer shows that Horatio was a loyal and caring friend.…
Horatio shows that like a roman he would rather kill himself than accept defeat and attempts to drink from the poisoned goblet. Horatio does not follow through with this act in the end. Horatio shows loyalty to Hamlet by telling Hamlet that he would rather die besides him than continue on living without his best friend. Horatio’s remarkable act of loyalty towards Hamlet helps reinforce the theme of honour and loyalty because Horatio is loyal to Hamlet even to the point of death. Horatio also reinforces the theme of honour by comparing himself to a roman.…
The ghost claimed to be Hamlet’s father and even revealed he had been murdered by his own brother, who had taken the crown from Hamlet’s father. After some thought, a chance arose for Hamlet to catch King Claudius showing a sign of regret for murdering his own brother, taking the crown from him, and also taking his wife at the same…
In using this example, Hamlet contrasts the difference between his friends by emphasizing Horatio’s loyalty, and his trustworthiness. Worrying for his own sanity, Hamlet also calls into question the assertions of his father’s ghost, and concocts a scheme in order to determine their validity. Wishing for Horatio’s input and accompaniment as an accomplice, Hamlet, trusting him, begins to explains the plan. Shakespeare uses allusion again in the passage, this time to remind Horatio of the sighting of King Hamlet’s ghostly apparition: “If his occulted guilt / Do not itself unkennel in one speech / It is a damned ghost that we have seen.”…
Much debate has been had over the topic of the Ghost in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Throughout the play, the ghost appears only to a select group of people: Hamlet, Horatio, Marcellus, and the other guards. There is no evidence that the ghost has appeared to other people, namely Claudius, Gertrude, and Polonius. In Act III scene IV, the Ghost appears to Hamlet, but Gertrude, who is in the same room cannot see it. It has been suggested that Gertrude cannot see the Ghost because of “ a lack of moral sensitivity”.…
