Investigation Hooke’s Law

AIM: To investigate how a spring behaves when a force of load stretches it. To figure out the relationship between the loads added to spring and the extension of spring.

HYPOTHESIS: I think that as the load added to spring increases, the extension of the spring will increase. The relationship between them will be directly proportional. The formula of these two variables might be F=kx. F stands for the load added to spring, k is spring constant and x stands for extension of spring. The extension of spring is directly proportional to the load added to spring. Extension/load always have the same value. In this experiment, it’s about 3cm/N. Every 1 N increase in load produces the same extra extension (3cm).

EVALUATION:
In this experiment, I proved the hypothesis twice. And each time, the results are similar. I also calculated the average of trial 1 and 2 as the data for conclusion graph. Besides, my results show the same as Hooke’s Law. I controlled the variables spring and the height of clamps by using the same spring and not moderating the clamps during all the experiment. Therefore, the results are accurate enough to prove the hypothesis.
However, the results are definitely not totally accurate. First, the ruler I used may not be accurate as its smallest unit is mm. In addition, when reading the measurements from the ruler, I sometimes read from an angle or round to the nearest mm. Second, the masses are not very accurate as it has been used for a long time.
For improvements, using a digital ruler, which can be more accurate than using naked eyes. For masses, using brand new masses next time. It can reduce the inaccuracy of the
