The spoonbill is compared to two animals. They are ‘greedy calf’ and ‘giraffe with a spotted back.’ The usefulness of these two comparisons in helping me to understand what the poet sees and hears something is that the spoonbill moves like a greedy cow trying to get to its milk, and the spoonbill looks like a spotted giraffe because of all the dried mud on its back in uneven spots. The poet tells me about the spoonbills flying ability by making me feel as if it flies very poorly, because as the spoonbill starts to fly it ends up crashlanding like an aeroplane or if it does start to fly it is all over the place because it is looking as if it is caught in a spider web and ends up crashlanding. So these are the two similes that describe the spoonbills flying
