People you see living on the streets make up roughly 20% of the homeless population worldwide. More than 62% of homeless people are “hidden” homeless. They are the people who briefly go to live with family or friends because they have nowhere else to go besides the street. Many homeless people in the novel Young Man with Camera stay on the ground floor of the abandoned Goodson building, making them hidden homeless. The meaning of homelessness is not just an absence of a roof over your head. It means not having stable economic and social life. It is not a choice; it is a reality.

In 2005, the UN did a study showing more than 100 million people worldwide are without a home. That is almost 3 times the population of Canada. They also estimated 1.6 billion people lack stable and adequate housing. Homelessness can impact anyone in Canada;it does not define a person. The average homeless person is a single male adult, aged 25-55. Up to 40% of homeless people are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual, and transgender. And, around 20% are youth ages 16-24.
