Home Of The Brave Hope Analysis

In any book there can be more than one theme, a lesson or message the author wants you to learn. In Home of the Brave, to me, the strongest them is hope. Throughout the story Kek’s determination, optimism and can do attitude help the reader understand that hope can help you get through the tough times that life might throw your way. Sometimes in life we go through hard times, but we should never stop believing things can change. There are many experiences that Kek goes through in book that show the theme of hope. For example, in the beginning of the book, we saw that Kek is confused by basically everything around him. Minnesota is very different from Africa, and English is not his first language. He is confused by jackets “fat shirt” (pg. 4), airplanes “flying boats” (pg. 10), and many of the phrases people in America use daily. However, over the course of the story Kek learns more English, in his ESL class with Mrs. Hernandez and Mr. Franklin. He understands more about the world and places around him, with help from his neighbor Hannah. Even when people try to tell him otherwise. “Dave turns to look at me. You know, Kek, he says, we aren’t sure where your mother is. His voice has the soft sting of pity in it.
