Hollings Scholarship Essay

I have had a lifelong passion for environmental issues that arose from a childhood spent amongst mountains, canyons, islands, and rivers. The Anacostia River near my home is dubbed “The Forgotten River,” for it has been transformed by neglect. It was integral to my childhood—my family canoed on the river, my crew team practiced on it, and my Eagle Scout project involved rehabilitating one of its wetlands. The river showed me that environmental issues are complex, involving science, social justice, politics, economics, and history. From a young age, I was stunned by my city’s apathy and saw a change that needed to occur. The complexities of the relationship between humans and their environment intrigued me.

If I am lucky, work hard, and am in the right place at the right time, it is very possible that I could end up doing climate research with the Navy. However, I am prepared to be flexible with my five years in the Navy. I will do the job that is needed of me to the best of my ability, and I will take on every experience as a learning opportunity. The Navy will teach me things that will be applicable in all walks of life. I see the Hollings Scholarship as an opportunity to plan for both my immediate and less-immediate future. Not only would this scholarship help me decide what I want to do in the Navy, but also give me invaluable tools to use throughout my career. After five years, I will have to decide if I want to stay in the Navy. I imagine this will be a very difficult decision, especially without experience in other sectors. This is the reason I am most excited about the Hollings Scholarship. It will provide me with a network of like-minded peers as well as mentors. It will show me another side of the ocean. If I love my time with NOAA, I could certainly imagine myself joining after my service

After working in the French Creek Watershed I began to hike around the lakes and streams. This means by having cleaner streams I would personally benefit from aesthetically pleasing clean streams. Even on a short weekend walk behind the cemetery I would pick up any bottles or small objects I saw I felt an obligation to give back to the area I was able to enjoy. I also understood it was vital to keep the area clean so it would stay enjoyably and inhabited by the animals I always hope to see. It is shown that people will spend more time hiking in clean areas and bring an economic benefit to the area (Loomis et al., 2000).…

Many people believe that Eastern Oregon is void of beauty. The mountains are bare and the air is dry. However, if these folks would follow me to the Snake River for a fishing trip, I think they’d change their minds. If they were to join me on the river, they’d hear the sound of motor boats traveling up the water, and they’d smell the engine exhaust and hear the laughter of the fishermen.…

On Saturday, April 21, I participated in the Earth day event at the Superfund site on the Duwamish River. I had an opportunity to speak with James Rasmussen of the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition/Technical Advisory Group (DRCC/TAG) about some of the challenges of working with such a diverse group of stakeholders and coming up with common goals for the restoration. James explained that one of the preliminary goals of the project was to include the people living in communities that are impacted by the condition of the river, and ensure their voices are heard. He spoke about BJ Cummings, who founded the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition in 2001 to represent and empower the Duwamish Valley's diverse resident, immigrant, fishing, recreational, environmental,…

“Good communities maintain a clean environment for their residents. Great communities enact policies to improve and protect the environment for generations to come” (AARP). The communities along the path of the pipeline are riddled with natural features that have been preserved for ecological integrity, and use by humans. In fact, some of the communities have local businesses that rely on human-environment interaction. Effected regions are frequently used by outdoor enthusiasts such as hikers, photographers, fisherman, and sight-seers.…

In the past week, thousands of Native Americans from over one hundred tribes have joined in alliance against the federal government, more particularly, against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This alliance is prevalent to protest plans for an oil pipeline that will cross through an Indian Reservation. I chose this article for my current event analysis not only because of the effect on the reservation, but also because of the negative environmental effects that will occur as a result of the oil pipeline plan. As an aspiring environmental scientist, I feel very strongly about the role the Native Americans are taking to protect our environment. I believe the role they are taking should be a priority to all people, not just the one’s living…

Air Pollution Policy and Controversy Rachel Carson boldly warned the American people in 1962 that if the United States continued its agricultural and industrial practices, songbirds would cease to exist. Losing an important part of the ecological food chain would have repercussions, possibly worse than we could imagine. While literature like Silent Spring helped bring attention to environmental concerns in the mid to late 1900s, several fatal disasters struck a stronger chord. Smog in Pennsylvania and the fire-lit Cuyahoga, for example, illustrated just how dearly the environment needed policy reform.…

Everywhere look today, there is garbage on the ground trees cut down, and polluted water and skies. This is not a new sight for anyone by any means, whether you live in a big city or a small town, you see garbage everywhere. Even as the months change it seems as if the garbage follows. Day by day more is added on top of the existing trash, it covers the ground, and clouds up, and ruins our water and skies. Humans are to blame for the excessive amounts of debris in our world, but, in some places were the garbage hasn’t taken over we have places like this photo.…

In Edward O. Wilson’s newest book Half Earth: Our Planet’s Fight for Life, he argues that if we conserve half of the earth’s land and water for nature, we are likely to save 90% of the remaining life on the planet. At Wildlands Network, we have long advocated for essentially the same vision for the biodiversity of North America, long before Dr. Wilson so eloquently put it into words at the global scale. We’re putting these ideas into practice with the formation of our Eastern Wildway Network, which envisions a connected landscape of wildlands and wild waters supporting thriving ecosystems, wildlife, and human communities that depend on them, from eastern Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. This past fall, over 40 leading conservationists came together…

Daniel Weintraub, a native Californian was born and raised in San Diego and graduated in economics from San Diego State University, has an formidable and impactful history with serving his years viably for The Sacramento Bee and covering for California’s politics and public policy, and now, with the disastrous juncture of the lack of water unconfined through the rivers; upon the devotion he has in himself, he sees a resolution to aid rivers of California. The project has been in operation for over half a century and the whole fabric of the community here has been built on having those reliable water supplies.’’ (Weintraub 4)…

Theodore Roosevelt said it best when he stated, “The conservation of natural resources is the fundamental problem. Unless we solve that problem it will avail us little to solve all others.” While my future career goal is to become a registered nurse and has little to do with the environment, I have made many initiatives into the study of conservation and environmental sciences. For the past two years, I have attended Massanutten Regional Governor’s School for Integrated Environmental Science and Technology; there I studied English, Statistics, Calculus, Geology, Agro-Ecology, and Agriculture Policy. I was able to learn in depth the logistics of the environment, climate change, and importance of conservation.…
