The Netherlands, located in northwestern Europe, is commonly addressed as “Holland” when talking about the provinces. The two provinces of Noord and Zuid together make up Holland. The geography of Holland (the Netherlands) in Europe is deemed unusual by many in that much of its land has been reclaimed from the sea, with almost 25% of its land at or below sea level, while remaining protected by dikes. The European part of the country can be split into two areas: the low and flat lands in the west and north, and the higher lands with minor hills, including the Ardennes Mountains, in the east and south. The country’s highest point is located at Vaalserberg, rising to 1,053 ft. An additional factor of influence on Holland’s physical appearance is that the country is among the most densely populated on earth. With Holland ranked 27th overall on the population scale, consequently, it is highly urbanized. Holland is bounded by the North Sea to the north and west, Germany to the east, and Belgium to the south. With a total area of 41,543 km sq. (16,040 sq. mi), land makes up 33,893 km sq.
