At the beginning and middle of the book, Holden says that the children’s innocence is withdrawn from them. In the story Phoebe is talking to Holden and he says to her, “You know that song, If a body catch a body coming through the rye”... Then Phoebe says, “It if a body meets a body…” Later Holden claims, “Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game… Thousands of little kids, and nobody’s around- nobody big, I mean- except me. And I am standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What do I have to do, I have to come out from somewhere and catch them”(191).
